Movie Review: Wizards of Waverly Place

By Lexi

She can turn Hawaiian ladies into dogs. Who is she? Alex Russo is the mischievous 15 year old teenager from a family of wizards. Wizards of Waverly Place (the movie) continues from the episodes featuring Alex Russo, played by Selena Gomez, and her family going on a “family trip” to the Caribbean.

Released on 2009, this movie was directed by Lev L. Spiro and filmed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The casts are: Selena Gomez as Alex Russo, Jake T. Austin as Max Russo, David Henrie as Justin Russo, María Canals Barrera as Theresa Russo, and David DeLuise as Jerry Russo.

Life is hard for Alex, who is quite sociable and chatty. She always wants to have some of her own time, to go out with her friends. Unfortunately, Alex’s personality caused her to wish her mom and dad never met, in a rush of anger. Max and Justin, suddenly confront Alex, who is fiddling with her wand after realizing her big mistake. They immediately ask a “supposed wizard” for instructions to where the Stone of Dreams is, and they divid into Alex and Justin find the stone, and Max keep guard of their parents going out with anyone else.

After almost losing their lives, the kids finally found the Stone of Dreams, glowing purple in the midst of some ruins. It took a lot of time and perspiration for Justin, since he was the big brother, to go inch by inch to the Stone. They finally get the Stone and find their father standing outside waiting for them. “You guys need to have the competition of the high wizard now! We have no time to waste! Your brother has already been sucked away from a memory tornado!!!” Alex and Justin complained that they weren’t prepared for the competition that was supposed to happen two years later after they finished their wizard training! But, their father insisted that this was the only way to save their family. Alex, of course, to everyone’s surprise, won the competition! So the family came home happily and learned their lesson together…

This movie is suitable for any age to watch and is kind of long too. I liked this movie because it has humor and frightening bits.

Movie Review: Maze Runner

“The Maze Runner”

By Lori

Thomas finds himself in “The Box” and moving upwards. He doesn’t remember anything and is very confused. Then, suddenly “The Box” stops moving and the ceiling opens up and he sees people he doesn’t recognize.

This is one of the newest movies and was released in September 11, 2014. It was directed by Wes Ball. This movie was based on the book series by James Dashner. The main characters, Thomas is voiced by Dylan O’Brien, Teresa is voiced by Kaya Scondelario, Minho is voiced by Ki-Hong Lee, and Gally, voiced by Will Poulter. There are many other characters, but these are the main characters. All the other people are all minor characters.

Thomas finds himself in a camp also known as the Glade; a group of kids with their memory taken from them, too. The Glade is in the middle of a giant maze. Every day before dawn The Runners set off and go look for a way out of the maze. They had been stuck in the Glade for a long time, but The runners always come back before dark, because the maze’s door always closes. No one wants to be stuck in the maze after dark. Every night the doors to the maze close and overnight, the walls in the maze change so whenever The Runners enter the maze in the morning, it is always different from the day before. But one day The Runners; Minho and Alby were late and the doors were about to close. Then the members of the Glade see them from a distance just as the doors were closing. There was a very strict rule about not stepping foot in the maze if you’re not a Runner, but Thomas knew they wouldn’t make it in time so he went in and the doors behind him closed.

Alby, one of the Runners was hurt, but they still survived the night, barely making it. Thomas breaks one of the most important rules, but has proven himself, taking Alby’s spot as a Runner. Then a girl named Teresa joins and Thomas feels that he remembers her for some reason. The moment she came everything went wrong. The doors stopped closing, and Grievers came in the Glade. Grievers are monsters that come out during the night, but now that the doors won’t close, they can easily get in. They finally decide to go into the maze in a huge group to find their way out and some die trying.

This has become a favorite movie and it is recommend for ages 10 and up. This movie is probably not that suitable for kids because there are parts where they fight. Though there is some fighting, it was still a great movie.

A Movie Review: “Maleficent”

“Maleficent”:A Movie Review

By Katelyn

A beautiful land falls into a cruel reign. Why? This entrancing and fascinating movie is “Maleficent”, a movie that just recently came out this year, 2014. Maleficent, originally a kind fairy, is starred and voiced by Angelina Jolie.

“Maleficent” is a changed version of Disney’s original movie, “Sleeping Beauty.” It is directed by Robert Stromberg, a famous movie director In “Maleficent”, Aurora is played by Elle Fanning, who also narrates the movie. The male lead King Stefan is voiced by Sharlto Copley. The movie used the song “Once Upon a Dream” as the movie’s closing credits song. “Maleficent” has been nominated for five awards and has won one award.

Just in front of this beautiful land also called the Moors, is a kingdom, with a huge towering castle. This kingdom has always wanted to take over the Moors. The Moors themselves are fantastic; the creatures inside are even more magical and something you have never seen before. Unfortunately, this land is protected by a powerful fairy: Maleficent. It all started with a boy wandering into the Moors, stealing some precious gems. Maleficent was called on to stop him, but they gradually liked each other. At the same time, the king of the other kingdom was planning a war on Moors, but they couldn’t beat Maleficent with her trees and fairies. The king was wounded and was about to die. He decided that whoever could kill Maleficent would be crowned the next king.

The song “Once Upon a Dream” was also used in the original Sleeping Beauty movie. The song was originally Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty, but Lana del Rey sang a cover of the song just for the movie “Maleficent.”

This movie would be recommended for teenagers and adults. This movie is also suitable for kids, but they should watch this movie with parents or siblings as it is kind of scary and creepy in the war part. Overall, this movie is very fun and awesome. If you didn’t watch it yet, you should watch it!

Movie Review: Shrek 2

“Shrek 2”

by LiT

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Deep in the forest in a land of fairy tales, lived an ogre named Shrek, voiced by Mike Meyer, and his wife, Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz. Despite their ugly orgeness, inside, they are both extremely human.

But unluckily, Fiona’s father, the King Harold, voiced by John Cleese, doesn’t think so.  After their wedding, he invites them to his castle in the kingdom of Far, Far, Away.  Unfortunately, no one had told him or his wife, Queen Lillian, voiced by Julie Andrews, anything about their daughter’s transformation or her new husband.  Though Queen Lillian made the best of it and warmly welcomed Shrek, King Harold was trying to find a way to get rid of his new son-in-law.

Along with King Harold, Queen Lillian, Princess Fiona, and Shrek, there is also the Fairy Godmother, voiced by Jennifer Saunders, her son, Prince Charming, voiced by Rubert Everett, and the ogre killer, Puss in the Boots, voiced by Antonio Banderass.  Determined that her son should marry Fiona, the Fairy Godmother used Harold’s desire for a better husband for his daughter to her advantage and had him carry out orders for her, that will all ensure the marriage of Prince Charming and Princess Fiona. Prince Charming is only too happy for a chance to marry Fiona, and is willing to do all he can.

Shrek 2 is directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury, and Conrad Vernon.  It is distributed by Dreamworks and is the second movie in the four movie series of Shrek, which includes, “Shrek”, “Shrek 3”, and “Shrek Forever After”. According to the producers, “Shrek 2” is a lot darker than the original.  Many lines and settings in “Shrek 2” are like those in other movies and places. For example, when Queen Lillian asked where King Harold where he was going, the king replied, “Bit of trouble from the old crusade wound, going to go outside and walk it off,” while holding his knee. This is exactly what John Cleese’s character, Basil Fawlty did and said in the movie, Fawlty Towers.

“Shrek 2” is suitable for kids from 3-12.  Of course, older kids can also watch, though, by that time, they might like other things. With plenty of humor and excitement, “Shrek 2” is a good movie for a family movie night, so if you are ever in the need for a nice adventurous and funny movie, you can try “Shrek 2”!
